Need a short blurb here about Left Brain-Right Brain-Lizard Brain theory.
Left Brain thinking is commonly associated with the logical, the linear, the rational, and the objective.
In other words, Left Brain and Engineering go hand in hand.
Left Brain thinking is useful for the development of well-ordered solutions and systems, and I rely on it to guide me through a project from start to finish.
On the other hand, a straightforward approach of this type isn't always the most successful path, and I find tempering it with a more holistic view brings a better result.
In other words, it is not enough to ask what needs to be done. We also need to ask why it is being done, what are the unintended consequences, how does it affect the things at the edges?
Right Brain thinking is commonly associated with the random, the holistic, the creative, the intuitive, and the subjective.
Right Brain thinking is perfect for when we need to not only think outside the box, but to set the box on fire and look for something better to stand on - and then we need to ask why we want to stand on something in the first place? Wouldn't we prefer a nice comfortable chair?
The point is Right Brain thinking, when applied properly, lets us develop new ideas, creative solutions, and disengage ourselves from anchors that may exist only in our minds.
Still, when you're applying this to a technical problem, you can't miss the fact that linear thinking is useful.
When I design and build furniture, I make heavy use of the Left Brain to think through the process, figure out the steps, and use that to form a structure that supports the designs that spring from my imagination.
…Then there is the Lizard Brain. This is the oldest part of our brain, a design handed down to us by ancestors with sharp teeth and scaly skin.
The Lizard Brain is about survival - regulation of the body, breathing, sex and reproduction. Call it the instinctual brain. Or given its function regulating our base systems, perhaps the intestinal brain is more to the point.
However, there is another interpretation of the Lizard Brain to be considered.
Laughter is a human behavior that can't really be explained. It comes from someplace deep. And to have a healthy life, laughter is needed.
So, in my take, Lizard Brains are also connected with the things that we do that make no particular sense. The things that make us smile for no reason. The things that make us laugh. They include the things that are slightly out of focus, undefined and undefinable, the things we file away as "other."
… And we’ve worked on projects all over the world. For a sampling of the global scope of our projects, read on!
